Back on the bike, we rode out of the beautiful neighborhood of Miraflores in Lima. It was to be a short ride of only 63k. It was a perfect ride for over 1/2 the distance we were on a bike path. It was easy leaving Lima. The rest of the way was on a wide shoulder on the Pan-American Highway. We were headed to Pucasana.
After leaving Lima, we followed the coast with views of the Pacific and several seaside towns. At one point, we deviated from the Pan Am to ride along the beach, which took us past many beach restaurants, deserted as it is still winter here. The road was too rough, so we turned east and got back on the highway.
The last seven kilometers into Pucusana was along an okay road but through barren land and poor housing areas where fishing boats were stored. I thought, why are we coming here? It doesn’t look in the least bit inviting.
Boy, was I wrong?
We were met by Kelly, the hotel owner from Denmark, who took us to the bottom of a big hill where we stored the bikes and car in a garage. We then took a moto taxi up the mountain on a terrible road, narrow, potholed road to his small hotel. What a charming place with a panoramic view of the most lovely harbor and town on this trip.
A swift beer while enjoying the stunning view and then off to explore the town and an early fish and seafood dinner. The restaurants close at 6 p.m.
A couple of Pisco Sours and a hearty fresh fish dinner, and I was a pleased man.
