Atocha to Tupiza is an incredible ride. The road gods are nasty as they take you to one false summit after another. You reach 4000m, then defend to 3600m, and then you do it all again, maybe four or five times until you get to 4240m. This section of Bolivia is incredible, beautiful, barren, arid, spectacular, stunning, remote, lonely, windy, humongous, and inspiring. After huffing and puffing at high altitude for most of the day, we got a great downhill with plenty of hairpin turns that took us to 2900m and into the red rock canyons of the Tapiza River, stunning rock formations and green trees. We have not seen trees for weeks. During the journey, we encountered some more road warriors. First, we met the Happy Family from France, traveling South America for 13 months. Then we encountered Emilly from Italy, cycling from La Paz to the bottom of Argentina solo. We arrived in Tupiza early and had time to walk around before the five of us and Emilly met for dinner.
