I started the day as planned and drove back to the stopping point the day prior, I managed to get in 11.1k before the gale force winds forced me to stop. I tried walking and pushing the bike but the cross winds would not permit me to do so. I would almost tip over and I had to brace myself against the force of the wind. Ok in the car again and off to the junction of 257 and number 9. Now I have a tailwind of 50kph with gusts to 75kph. I even wondered if that might too much. Anyway, I had to give it a go, so off I went. It was so easy I covered 100k very quickly, in fact, I probably never peddled about 1/3 of the distance, I just let the wind push me along. My rule was, when my speed dipped below 31 I would pedal hard and get it up to around 40 then coast and repeat. Along the way, we stopped at the large deserted Estancia San Gregorio. It was the first estancia to export wool and meat to Europe, now it is just a ghost town. Since I was moving so rapidly we decided to head straight for the ferry to Terra del Fuego. Got there and took the 30-minute crossing to the island and the last small section of the Odyssey. The wind on the other side helped for about 25k but then the road turned south and I was back in the now familiar situation of having to fight the crosswind from the west. This tires you out as you worry mentally about the trucks coming from behind, that you can’t hear, and maybe the wind will blow you out into their path, your hands get sore from gripping the handlebars so tightly so you don’t lose control. My path becomes a jagged one, blown to the left, correct quickly head to the should, and repeat over and over. Sometimes when she can Johana will drive with one wheel on the shoulder and I will ride in the wind shadow of the car. This maneuver is always interrupted by oncoming traffic. After 151k I decided I had had enough and I put the bike in the car and drove the last 15k into town to a small hostel run by a very friendly lady who made us feel right at home. All Night I listened to the wind howling outside and I keep hoping it will stop, but it doesn’t. Right now it is blowing at 50 with gusts to 77kph. I can’t ride it that. Should we stay here and wait a day or two, or should we drive on, maybe I should only ride when there is a headwind or tailwind. On the Beaufort Wind scale, 62 -74 is rated as Gale force and 75 to 87 as Strong Gale.
