Now that I am back in Costa Rica, I want to share some of my training rides. From where I live, I have to ride on the Pan American highway if I want to depart from my home.
However, that is not my favorite road to ride if I am heading north as the traffic can get busy, and some of the trucks and buses can crowd you. If I head south, the highway has an extensive shoulder and is much safer, but there is little shade, and it can get extremely hot if you start too late.
I have one ride I do a lot, and that is climbing up the volcano called Rincon De la Vieja. It has a lovely gentle climb of about 13 km with an average gradient of four or five percent. There is very little traffic even though Rincon de la Vieja is a national park.
The rest of the time, I load my bike and drive to where I have maybe a half dozen routes on quiet roads. The following video shows part of my circle beach ride, which contains two steep climbs with some sections reaching 14 to 16 percent.
Some days I ride the circle route, but on other days I stop along the way and enjoy the views, and occasionally I go for a swim. I don’t mind swimming in my riding shorts as they dry very quickly
This route takes me to the Panama, Hermosa, and Coco beaches, with Playa Hermosa and Playa Coco having lovely beach towns. There are also several resorts along the ocean. To name a few, there are Four Seasons, Hyatt, Planet Hollywood, Secrets, Mangroove, Villas del Sole, and a number of smaller properties. To view a list of resorts follow this link, Guanacaste Beach Resorts.
The link below is a video of yesterdays beach ride.
