Yesterday was a long ride of 142k and 958m and a scary crash.
The day we started by riding through a desert once again. Then, we reached a predominantly agricultural area with elderberries, avocados, sugar cane, and vegetables growing for kilometers. At that point, we picked up a powerful headwind, 25 to 45 kph, as we headed into a lovely mountainous area that could have been in North Africa.
About 16k from the finish, the road deteriorated, and the traffic picked up. We came around a corner on a climb, and there in front of us was a tunnel. I wouldn’t say I like tunnels, and I like them even less today. We turned on all our lights and started through. Of course, it was dark with no lights, just my bike light. I was moving fast as I just wanted to get out of the tunnel as quickly as possible. Then I heard a truck coming up behind me. I thought I would move over a bit. It was a big mistake; I hit a curb I did not see. I flew over the handlebars and hit the stone wall. Traffic stopped, and people were shouting. I struggled to my feet and got the bike upright. I checked all my bones to see what was broken, if any, and everything seemed okay. I walked the bike out of the tunnel. I had a minor road rash, a sore hand, and some sore ribs. Against the advice of the team, I decided to keep riding. After five more kilometers, I stopped as my hand could not grip the handles or the back broke. The road was terrible, and I did not have the mobility to dodge the potholes, so I got in the car for the last 11k.
Today, I feel better and will try riding as we have a short 80k ride today.
Oh yes, the bike is ok.
